CHILDREN
AT HIGH RISK IN CUSCO
The
city of Cusco is located in the Andes of Perú, at 3,350 meters above sea
level. It has a mountainous topography and a variable climate.
Cusco is considered the
archeological capital of the Americas, and has been declared by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage
of Humanity.
Cusco has earned this
recognition, among other titles it possesses, due to the presence of such historical monuments
as Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo and others.
Like other unique places, Cusco has become an obligatory tourist destination
for those visiting Perú.
However, Cusco belongs to a region
that also has one of highest levels of poverty
in the country. Evidence of
this poverty
is shown by the presence of numerous children and adolescents wandering the city streets,
day and night.
They are seen working, selling various products, begging, prostituting
themselves, or simply doing nothing,
waiting for a tourist to give them some change.
Children that are in the streets all the time
participate in activities that threaten their
physically and mental well-being. Because
they live in the streets, they are in permanent
contact with antisocial people from whom they
learn negative behaviors and develop
counter-values. Many of the
people they
encounter in the streets try to exploit
the children in different ways, physically,
emotionally, and sexually. |

EN ALTO RIESGO EN CUSCO
La
ciudad del Cusco está ubicada
en la sierra de Perú, a 3,350 m.s.n.m,
con una topografía accidentada y clima
variado. Es considerada la capital
arqueológica de
América, declarada
por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Cultural
de la Humanidad, entre otros títulos
que posee, porque en ella se encuentran
los monumentos históricos como
Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo y otros,
así como paisajes diversos
que la han convertido en el destino turístico
obligado de quienes visitan Perú.
Sin
embargo, Cusco es una de las regiones
que posee uno de los más altos índices
de pobreza del país, hecho que se evidencia en la presencia muy numerosa de niños
y niñas de diferentes edades que de día y de noche deambulan
en las calles
céntricas de la ciudad y alrededores,
trabajando, vendiendo
artículos diversos,
mendigando,
prostituyéndose o simplemente sin hacer
nada, esperando que algún turista les de una propina.
Los niños que están en las calles
todo el tiempo, realizando actividades
diversas se encuentran en alto riesgo
material y moral, porque se relacionan
con toda clase de personas, especialmente
con gente de conducta antisocial,
gente que los explota
y/o utiliza sexualmente. |
